Introduction
On 15–16 June 2024, as part of Sportfest 2024, the Georgian Robotics Association organised a Robo Festival: 20 school teams raced through a labyrinth, a zigzag and a straight line, and 17 SUMO robot teams fought in the ring.
A two-day Robo Festival
On 15–16 June 2024 the Georgian Robotics Association (GRA) organised a Robo Festival in Tbilisi, as part of Sportfest 2024. The festival brought two competitions together:
- a school robotics competition — open to any public or private school in Georgia with the right robot equipment;
- a SUMO robot competition — open to anyone over 16; student and school teams were welcome too.
Teams were selected in two stages: first the applications were reviewed, then the robots of the selected teams were checked, and after the final confirmation the teams prepared for competition day.
School robots: 20 teams and three tracks
In the school robotics category 20 teams competed in the labyrinth, zigzag and straight line. One robot per team had to complete all three tasks, so the winner was the team that best combined speed and precision.
Summing up all three tracks, the top three were:
- 🥇 "RoboRangers" — Lagodekhi Public School No. 1;
- 🥈 "Lokokina" — Zhiuli Shartava Public School No. 4, Rustavi;
- 🥉 "Hackers" — Tsutskhvati Public School, Tkibuli municipality.
"Lokokina" is a familiar name: the team won the mBot category at our first school competition in 2022.
SUMO: 17 teams in the ring
In a SUMO robot match two autonomous robots try to push each other out of the ring — with no remote control, only sensors and their own program.
17 teams registered in the SUMO category, 6 reached the final, and the team ECE21 W won. The ring saw many tense battles.
The winners received sets of electronic components to develop their robots further.
What came next
In 2025 the association held an even bigger event — ROBO BATTLE 2025, where a combat robot championship took place for the first time alongside SUMO. Current competitions: SUMO and Line Follower and School robots. Every championship year by year — in our history.
Partners
The Georgian Robotics Association held the Robo Festival together with its partners:
- Ilia State University's Center for Technological Entrepreneurship and Innovation Development and FabLab Iliauni;
- the EU-funded project "Youth Technology Clubs Network".
Thank you to every participant, mentor and organiser — these two days were full of emotions, new knowledge and experience!
